Why and when did you start this site?
The Healthy Helping was started in 2010 as a way for me to save all my recipes without having to keep track of thousands of pieces of paper. It also served as a way to share great food with my family and friends.
How long have you been vegetarian and why?
I have been vegetarian for about 13 years now. When I was in high school, my best friend was vegan. She was always pestering me about eating meat, so when my family celebrated Lent one year, I gave up meat just to prove I could with the intention of chowing down on my Grandma’s Corn Beef and Cabbage as soon as the 40 days were over.
My stepmom was really insistent that I make sure I was getting proper nutrition while on the diet and bought me a book on vegetarianism. Reading it I learned there were other reasons to make this life choice, not just because you don’t want to harm animals. Currently, I don’t eat meat because it is not food to me anymore (it would be like trying to eat a tire) and because it healthy for me, the environment, and the future of our planet.
What is your criteria for deeming recipes healthy?
All the recipes featured on the blog, I personally deem healthy since they mostly contain non-processed foods and are all vegetarian. That being said, I eat these foods in respect for a balanced lifestyle including moderation and daily exercise. I am by no means a doctor or health expert, so if you are looking to adapt to a healthier lifestyle or looking for nutritional advice, I would suggest consulting with your physician.
Do you have a comments policy?
Comments are always welcomed and loved, so comment away! I don’t allow for anonymous comments since I like to get to know whom I’m communicating with.
As of now, I moderate comments so I can keep out spammers and also make sure no one is posting anything hurtful. However, I am always open for constructive criticism when done in an appropriate way.
Can I link to your site? Do you exchange links?
You are more than welcome to link to The Healthy Helping. Thanks for your interest! However, I do not exchange links. I like to share blogs and sites that I am actually reading personally and do my best to keep that list up to date. That being said, if you have a blog or site, feel free to link to it in the comments section, and I will be sure to check it out.
Who takes the photos?
All the photos are taken by me (or my boyfriend under my direction). The earlier posts were taken with our point and shoot camera back in the day. Since then we have upgraded to a Canon SLR.
Can I republish a photo or a recipe?
No, you cannot use my blog content for your site. I work really, really had to create the posts for this blog, and photos and recipes may not be used without my permission first.
If you make one of the recipes and want to post about it on your site, be sure to link back to my site to provide proper attribution. If you adapt the recipe, you can find more information about attribution from the Food Bloggers Alliance. (http://foodblogalliance.com/a/recipe-attribution/)
Do you freelance?
I do! If you have a writing or photography job in mind, please feel free to contact me.
Do you accept products for review?
I do, though I will only share products that I feel are exceptional, that I would actually use, and fit with my and the blogs ethics and ideals. Being in PR myself, I know the importance of a good blogger review and am open for discussions. Please feel free to contact me if you are interested.
